Clubs are designated comedy venues that book on a weekly basis. Depending on the club, your work week may cover three, four or five consecutive nights. Some of the bigger comedy club chains include Yuk-Yuks, Catch a Rising Star, The Improv and the Funnybone.

Any comic of any worth prefers clubs over one-nighters. The venue is perfectly designed for comedy, with state-of-the-art lighting and sound, and an elevated stage with unobstructed sight lines.

The crowds are there for one reason - comedy. They pay good money to attend, making them attentive and, usually, receptive. And because most club's hire door staff, hecklers are quieted immediately. The overall setting makes these venues conducive for clever, well-written material.

Clubs are a great networking source for new acts. If the headliner or feature likes your work, he or she may recommend you to other club owners or bookers. Or maybe even invite you to open for them at other venues. Many big-name acts, like Brian Regan, George Lopez and Robert Schimmel use comics they worked with at a club to now travel and open for them across the country.

If it's an A-Club (as compared to a B-Club) you have the chance to work with a major act. They often attract big crowds and media. And sometimes they're accompanied by their agents and producers. It's a great way for generating possible recognition for yourself and getting your name on the comedy radar.
One-Nighters

One-nighters, also referred to as hell gigs, take place in bars, restaurants, hotel banquet rooms, bowling alleys and any other public place licensed to serve alcohol. Sometimes bookers will string four or five one-nighters together on consecutive nights in different towns, allowing you to make it monetarily worth your while. They try to geographically bunch these gigs together, but out west it's not uncommon to drive five or six hours in between shows.

Conditions are often less than ideal for performing comedy. Lighting can be non-existent. Sound systems shoddy. And stairs can serve as stages.

Crowds are less attentive. Often some people are only there by default, holdovers from a happy hour that ended three hours earlier. Consequently, you're dealing with loud drunks stepping over your lines, trying to challenge your claim as the funniest person in the room. This doesn't happen all of the time, but it's common.

Some one-nighters are precursors to dance nights. So while you're on stage the bar fills with disinterested, chatty people anxiously waiting for you to shut-up so they can dance.

And many one-nighter crowds base a successful show not on a comic's talent, but in their ability to send shots up on stage and get the comic drunk.

Despite the dire description, one-nighters serve a purpose for new acts. They're good venues for getting stage time and sharpening your teeth, learning how to deal with hecklers, learning how to keep your emotions - anger and fear - in check, learning how to cope with bombing, and learning how to work a room.

Just make sure you don't get labeled as a one-night comic. You can identify one-night acts a mile away. They're good at pimping crowds for shots or access to weed. Instead of entertaining they're more focused on using the stage as a vehicle for getting laid. And their entire acts rely on base, lowbrow material. Don't get caught in this trap. It's an act that will prevent you from working clubs and condemn you to comedy hell.

When I'm painting or composing, I have an opportunity to focus on something entirely aesthetic as well as completely for me instead of every one of the sound building up inside my head. Furthermore, self-expression is a very crucial way for someone to get acquainted with oneself- particularly in the essential elementary school age. Through arts programs away from schools, we're building generations of youngsters that will struggle to think creatively and independently. We are sending them to school and ready for them to sit down through math, Language, and science lessons without having break to have any kind of creative energies flowing. The History of Mickey Mouse

How Mickey Mouse came to be is not crystal clear. The story seems to change based on who is telling it. Since all the parties involved and mentioned in the original creation of Mickey have passed away the absolute truth may never be known. Many claim that Walt Disney himself created the popular mouse. Disney is said to have drawn the cartoon mouse and his close friend Ub Iwerks revised the drawing into a form that would be quicker to draw. The personality and voice for Mickey were done by Walt Disney himself. Another story claims that Hugh Harman turned a picture of Walt Disney into Mickey. In any event this mouse started out as Mortimer Mouse until Walt's wife convinced him that the name did not match with the characters audience, and would sound too snobby. Walt Disney also has said that part of Mickey's personality was based on silent movie superstar Charlie Chaplin.

In 1928 the first short called Plane Crazy was made available but Disney was unable to find a distributor. A second short named The Gallopin' Gaucho also failed to find a company unwilling to distribute the cartoon short. In November 1928 Steamboat Willie became the first Mickey Mouse short to find a distributor. In November of 1928 the short became an instant hit and audiences loved that music and sound effects were used to add humor to the cartoon. This success encouraged Disney to adopt sounds into all future animations and the 1929 short The Karnival Kid featured Mickey's first spoken words. In 1935 a new animator redesigned Mickey to his more familiar appearance that we have grown to love today.

In 1978 to celebrate 50 years of Mickey Mouse he was awarded his own star Hollywood Boulevard, a first for an animated character. Over eighty years later Mickey Mouse is still around and new cartoons featuring the mouse are still being made. Currently the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, designed for preschool age children, is shown daily on Disney's own cable channel.

From a humble start Mickey Mouse has grown into an international cartoon icon. Today you can find Mickey Mouse on Christmas Ornaments, snow globes, and many, many other types of merchandise.

Ballet Comique De La Reine

The tutu is the symbol of ballet, the iconic representation of La Danse. The tutu is celebrated in venues as diverse as the painter Degas's pastel sketches of ballerinas to a little girl's dreams of becoming a ballerina with the magnificent theatre stages where Ballet is performed in between.

But tutus are relative newcomers to the world of ballet. When the first ballets took place in Italian Renaissance courts during the 1600s, the female dancers wore their own dresses when dancing The pannier-style skirts and long-sleeved bodices that did very little to facilitate fancy footwork and graceful arm movements in Ballet.

Even after the Italian princess Catherine de Medici married the French King Henri II and brought the dance to the French court as the Ballets de Cour, costumery continued to obscure rather than call attention to the legs supporting the graceful dancers.

The first Ballet de Cour was the famous Ballet Comique de la Reine which took place in Paris in 1581 as part of a wedding celebration when Henry III's favourite, the Duke de Joyeuse married Marguerite, the sister of the queen consort Louise of Lorraine. Queen Louise arranged for the composer and choreographer Balthasar de Beaujoyeulx to devise a five and a half hour dance extravaganza. The spectacle, based on the Greek myth of Circe the enchantress, cost over one million écu to produce and starred Queen Louise herself. The climax of the ballet came when the Four Cardinal Virtues appealed to the gods to defeat Circe's malign powers and Jupiter responded by transferring the sorceress's magic to the French royal family.

The costumes worn by dancers of such spectacles as the Ballet Comique de la Reine didn't resemble tutus in the slightest. Instead, they were fashioned from brocades and other heavy materials, richly embroidered, and ornamented. The dancers also wore their own shoes on stage. As one might expect, these kinds of costumes greatly restricted the movements of the dancers.

Ballet became an increasingly popular form of entertainment after this beginning. However because of its association with the French royal class, its popularity was temporarily eclipsed around the time of the French Revolution. The French Revolution also brought a significant change to dancewear itself inspiring simple, lighter clothing that permitted a far greater range of movement. It was around this time that heeled shoes gave way to slippers, skirts were shortened to ankle length and ballet tights made their first appearance.

Still, it wasn't until 1832 that the familiar layers of ethereal tulle made their first formal appearance on a ballerina named Marie Taglioni who was dancing the lead role in La Sylphides, a ballet her father, the famous Italian choreographer Filippo Taglioni, created just to showcase her talents. Taglioni was so proud of her excellent pointe work that she shortened her skirt to show it off - and so the tutu was born.

Taglioni's tutu was of a style that has come to be known as the Romantic tutu, a dreamy confection of three to five layers of soft, floaty tulle with a high waisted skirt that ended just at the calf. Other familiar tutu styles include the tiered, graduated net costume with top skirts of chiffon and organdy known as the pancake tutu; the fitted bodice and short, stiff, bell-shaped skirt known as the classical tutu; and the short, loose tulle skirt known as the powder-puff tutu that was invented by George Balanchine's designer, Karinska.

The tutu is not just an aesthetic innovation. Its light weight allows female dancers to move unencumbered while on stage. In a very real sense, those of us who love ballet owe the ballerina's fabulous arabesques, battlements, twists, turns and other dazzling footwork to the development of the tutu.

One of the most feared creatures of modern horror has to be the zombie - lumbering around in his or her tragic trance with no soul and - more terrifying - no way to die (well he's already dead). All he wants is human meat, more specifically live, jelly-like brains. His pale pallor and torn-away flesh make him hideous to look at - which of course, makes him a great Halloween outfit. This uncoordinated and soulless creature appears unstoppable. No stake (vampires) or endless cups of caffeine (Freddy Krueger) will help you here.

So how do you become a zombie? And, more usefully, learn to kill one (actually make that more than one as they tend to lumber around in groups). It's easy to buy a zombie costume for Halloween by searching on-line. You will find a wide variety of Zombies for instance there are Skeleton Zombies, Doctor Zombies and the Blockbuster classic Zombie from Dawn of the Dead. In the meantime we'll give you a quick potted history here of the creature which worryingly has its roots in real life West African mythology.

The first zombies were believed to be Haitian slave plantation workers. The only way to prevent the dead body becoming a zombie at that time apparently was to remain at the unfortunate corpse's graveside watching over it until its flesh began to rot. Legend has it only those who'd recently passed over were targeted and used as obedient, unquestioning servants (i.e. zombies).

Another recorded zombie emergence was in Hierakonpolis in Egypt during a British dig where an explorer happened upon a tomb containing a partially decomposed body. The brain had been infected with a virus and the tomb was covered in scratch marks where the body had attempted to claw its way out.

Being buried alive and re-emerging would also count as being a tad zombie-like. This would happen in past times when medicine was not as advanced. Catatonia - a particular affliction of schizophrenia - has also been attributed to the zombie legend.

We've famous film director Bela Lugosi to thank for the entrance into popular culture of this creature in the early 1930s in his film White Zombie. The zombies lay passive for decades until 1968 when George Romero revived them for Night of the Living Dead. And they've been around as a Halloween Fancy Dress Costume ever since. Their emergence was - scarily for us today - the result of a nuclear spill.

So how do you kill a zombie? Well, getting back to their origins, West African legend says if you feed a zombie salt it will return to the grave - all very neat and tidy with not too much exertion involved for us living beings. By far the most successful method is by destroying the brain first, usually with a sharp instrument (this can prove tricky!). Once achieved you should then burn the body to prevent any resurrection, or should that be re-resurrection...

There has been much debate about whether studio glass should be classified as art or craft. What is the difference between art and craft anyways? This article goes over the history of studio glass briefly and explains why the classification is not that important compared to appreciating it as it is.

Studio glass is defined as unique work handmade by a single artist-maker, as distinguished from factory-made glassware.

France was the center since the 1880s, with famous artists like Emile Galle, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and their contemporaries. Other famous French names are Henry Cros, Albert Dammous, Maurice Marinot, and Francois Decorchemont. Georges Despret, a Belgian, also contributed to the process.

In the 1950s in America, artists began to establish networks, in which they concentrated on kiln-forming - fusing, slumping, enameling, and lampworking. In the 1960s, the small pot kiln developed which could be set up anywhere and was manageable by one artist. Another discovery that fueled the American movement was the availability of glass that melts at low temperatures. Harvey Littleton was an influential figure in this.

As interesting as the history of studio glass is, some people worry about its classification. Is it art or craft?

It is hard to decide on, because its very definition is very blurry; is a glassware studio glass just because it was handmade or made by one single artist? Unlike our assumptions today, early factory-made glassware was not always made by machines. Meanwhile, individual artists may use molds or other various tools and "machines" that technically disqualify their work from being defined as studio glass. But that seems to be too narrow a definition and seems to make little sense.

Moreover, it is not clear why the term "craft" should have a negative connotation, especially because it originally meant "magic, strength, power, science" in the 15th century. Craftsmen have been and are an integral part of the society and the art scene. They make useful things that we cannot live without. Similarly, art can be useful, too. Many monumental works serve a function, and modern art and design works are often as aesthetically appealing as they are useful. But somehow many people seem to believe that the biggest characteristic of art is that it is useless. Art vs. craft and its hierarchy has been debated for a long time, but the distinction seems to be superfluous and blurred at most.

While studio glass is by some people still seen as "mere craft" (because glass is so firmly identified with utility), others have changed its concept since the 1980s. They jumped from studio glass to a new term, "glass art." This seems to be the general trend now, but regardless of its classification or definition, glassmaking techniques take years to perfect and deserves respect as it is.

Colin Firth Biography

Colin Firth will always be remembered as the sexiest Mr Darcy ever after he emerged from the lake in a wet shirt in the 1995 TV adaptation of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice."

But Firth is just as romantic in his private life. In 1995, just after the series was shown on television, he met Italian film producer Livia Giuggioli on a film set, and it was love at first sight.

He said, "I remember seeing her through this crowd of people and just knowing I had to get her." They married two years later in her native Italy, and no other woman has ever turned his head. He says his wife is the most beautiful woman in the world and they have made it 15 years together, which is pretty good in Hollywood standards and the marriage is going to last forever.

When he met his wife he had just split up with Jennifer Ehle, his co-star on "Pride and Prejudice." Firth and his wife have two sons Luca, born in March 2001 and Matteo born in August 2003.

He also has a son William "Will" Joseph Firth from an earlier relationship with Meg Tilly, his co-star in "Valmont" who was born in 1990. He still keeps in touch with him and Tilly's other children as he was their stepfather.

Firth was born in Grayshott, Hampshire and he spent part of his childhood in Nigeria where his father was teaching. He also lived in St Louis, Missouri when he was 11-years-old. He later attended the Montgomery of Alamein School, a state comprehensive in Winchester (now King's School) and then Barton Peveril School in Eastleigh.

While he was at King's School he wanted to play the guitar but the school banned the guitar and saxophone as they were not serious instruments and he was told to play the baritone euphonium instead.

His acting training took place at the Drama Centre in London and in 1983 Firth starred as Guy Bennett in the award-winning production of "Another Country". In 1984 he made his film debut in the screen adaptation of the play, taking the role of Tommy Judd opposite Rupert Everett as Bennett.

In 1986 he starred with Sir Laurence Olivier in "Lost Empires" a television adaptation of J.B. Priestley's novel. The following year he appeared alongside Kenneth Branagh in the film version of J.L. Carr's "A Month in the Country".

Millefiori Murano glass pendants were first introduced sometime during the 19th century, but they draw their origins from a technique that was available long before this period. The staple technology of creating concentric circle patterns had been around ever since ancient times, with the credit for inventing it being attributed to the Romans. Much later, during the Renaissance period of Murano glassmaking, master glassmakers on the Island of Murano refined this technology, adapting it to the production of not only Millefiori Murano glass pendants, but also other jewelry items and various decorative objects.

Most of the techniques of Murano glass working involve manually handling bundles of liquefied glass mounted on metal rods. The old ways of working the glass were very ingenious, with the artisans molding bundles of colored glass into the shape of canes, which they then immersed into molten glasses of various colors, to create multiple superimposed layers. When sliced, each segment of the cane would display its own pattern of multicolor concentric circles, allowing the artisan to achieve innovative decorative effects by slicing the glass canes into disks and blending these with various Murano glass items.

The glass canes molded into shape by artisans are known as Murrine, a technique believed to have been acquired by the Venetians from Byzantine glassmakers soon after the fall of Constantinople. By the end of the 15th century, Marietta Barovier, daughter of a famous glass artisan and illustrious personality of the time, introduced a method that allowed the creation of symmetrical star patterns. It consisted in pouring the molten glass into a metallic mold to give it a cylindrical shape, transferring the glass cylinder into a tubular mold containing glass powder of different colors, and then inserting the mixture into the furnace. The result would be a smooth glass cylinder with a decorative star pattern implanted in the center.

Around the 15th century, the Murrine technique was often being employed to create ornamental spheres, intricately decorated walking canes and glass pearls. Later, the same technique would be used to create the popular Millefiori Murano Glass Pendants. The word Millefiori translates from Italian as "a thousand flowers", and during the golden age of Murano glassmaking, it would be on the lips of everyone, both inside and beyond Italian borders.

The process of manufacturing Millefiori Murano glass pendants involves cutting thin slices of Murrine glass canes and aligning them in a circular fashion in a mold. The mold is then filled with glass powder and the design is heated at high temperature in the furnace until the content of the mold is fused into a single piece. A similar array of techniques is used for producing other Millefiori jewelry pieces such as earrings.

Although the molds used for shaping Millefiori Murano glass jewelry are rarely changed, each resulting design is one-of-a-kind. Thanks to the abundance of color combinations, the different numbers of layers used, as well as the varying consistency of molten glass, each Murrine comes with its unique characteristics. Moreover, the endless design possibilities that can result from using the Millefiori technique further ensures that no two finished pieces are ever alike.

Despite these critiques, however, the Grammy Awards remain among the highest of all honors within the music business.

That year, and in 1987, Nickelodeon conducted a national poll for kids' top picks in various pop culture categories - from TV, movies, music, books, video games, and sports - then the winners all filmed individual thank you's to air on a special Nickelodeon program. The third year, 1988, Nickelodeon revamped the program as a live awards show and gave it the new name of Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. All else will depend on the teaching of the Bible, the written revelation of God for man. I believe we will never go wrong if we abide in God.

So, it is advisable that you have thoroughly read both The New and Old Testament. Mature Christian in faith knows exactly the right verse in any given situation, lets assume that you are just a new born baby and still on the process of growing....so we take in soft food first or milk. Claim a passage and call it your own.

It has been very helpful for me, most especially during the early stage of my self-searching to daily utter Bible verses. These verses keep me from falling apart.

High carbon steel will yield a much stronger blade than stainless and will take and hold a better edge without being brittle. Differential tempering is a type of hardening of the blade done with clay and a forge and is what yields that beautiful wavy pattern along the sharp edge of the blade.

There are quite a few in fact including but not limited to farmer's daughters, nuns, librarians, teachers, ex-girlfriends, sisters and my daughter, who are not included for legal reasons concerning my being on the panel, being its only panel member and to avoid any allegations of bias. London's Secret Cinema's

I was with my girlfriend one night out in Clapham after a very nice meal with friends at the Tsunami Sushi restaurant. We decided to have a quick night cap to finish off a lovely evening and headed to The Belle Vue pub close to Clapham Common. It was a Sunday evening, around 8pm, and was pleasantly surprised as we stumbled through the door. Expecting the standard pub atmosphere of chat, laughter and pints being pulled, instead we were greeted by what appeared to be a secret cinema club! People were transfixed to a large screen, watching the cult classic Top Gun movie. Not a word was spoken as people held pints of lager in one hand and dipped into their popcorn with their right!

We were blown away by this cool event that we had just by chance come across. After speaking to the bar manager I understand that this was a new trend sweeping across London where pubs and bars transform for a night into a cinema. In order to add some freshness to the pub and bar world, they are turning to movie nights at bars. It's a fantastic idea and adds a new spin to going to your local pub. The film nights at London pubs can vary, but mostly film be showing cult classic films that you haven't seen for years but put a big smile upon your face. It's a great opportunity to go out with your friends and get together to have a laugh watching a movie in a unique and intimate space. For me it combines two great loves of mine, movies and beer!

After my first London bar movie night experience I was keen for more. I did a bit of research on the internet and discovered there quite a few other London bars putting on movie nights. The next one I checked out was The Roxy in London Bridge. This is a really cool bar that doubles up as a cinema screening. They put on all sorts of independent films as well as cult classics. There is a fantastic screen at the back of the bar with sofas and arm chairs for you to sit back in whilst enjoying the movie. They serve food and drink whilst you watch the movie so it really is a fantastic place to watch a film in London.

Another fantastic film night at a London bar that I found was at The Grand Union in Brixton. This bar has one of the best beer gardens in London and throughout the spring and summer they put on movie nights in the garden. They have a huge screen in the beer garden so you can sit outside and watch films, enjoying the warm weather whilst sipping on a cocktail as the movie beams out. This is one of my favourite film nights at a London bar. They put on a cult movies so expect films like Cool Running's, Top Gun, Scream and Taxi Driver.

After the cultural revolution, the Chinese people yearned for some form of freedom, some sort of narrative that would in many ways give leeway to the suppressed feelings which culture have suffered under Mao. It was a missed blessing and we are still now trying to really capture and grasp the consequences.

This past week, a New national museum was opened in Beijing, which in many ways can illustrate this present and complex scenario.

First the curators are Germans, in the opening of the Chinese National Museum, which sends a clear message of their own insecurities. The construction took 11 years, and often interrupted as the party could not agree which path to take. The exhibition is a mix of the Chinese recreation of the history and glories of the Party while worshiping the western ways with the title "the celebration of the European Enlightenment". This is dichotomy that is now deep in the modern Chinese zeitgeist.

They are unsure which way to go. Perhaps the explanation lies in precisely the lack of any cultural value that was left after Mao. One may agree or disagree with his cultural stands, but no one can deny that he had a clear vision; Mao The Leader, Mao the Sun that shines over China. All that succeeded after that can hardly be expressed in one line or perhaps it can be better described as many have already expressed, a lie, a fairy tale made of cement, glass and steel.

The Germans do share with Chinese, similar values; the worship of order and power. This is a problematic and dangerous mix that history has shown the dire outcomes when the people are subjected to these ideals. The museum is located far from the common people, and they will also be far from any contact to the art there presented.

The new museum also reflects another Sino - German passion for the massive structures to celebrate the conquest of power. The museum architects, also Germans, have made comments how the Regime main concern; was that the museum was built as the biggest as far as the size; not the cultural or artistic value.

The National Museum is in many ways may best represent the present Chinese modern culture; a vast blank space, meticulously guarded, lavishly built for the few which is likely to remain empty, most of the time, for except of the selected tours or foreign visitors that may come to admire the new Chinese wealth. Ann Petry: First African American Woman to Sell Over One Million Books

In honor of Black History month I am featuring African American authors who made history by accomplishing extraordinary feats at a time when the odds were so heavily stacked against them. This week the spotlight rests on Ann Petry, the first African American female author to sell over one million copies of her book.

Petry was born in 1911 in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, where her father and grandfather ran a drugstore. Petry loved to read and from the age of fourteen she knew she wanted to be a writer. She wrote poetry and short plays in high school, but after graduation she chose the safe route and enrolled in the pharmacy program at the University of Connecticut where she earned her PhG degree. Ann worked in the family business until she married in 1938 and moved to New York.

The direction of Ann's life changed when she took her first job in the advertising department of an African American newspaper, The Amsterdam News. She later became a reporter and editor for the People's Voice, a weekly newspaper, writing about Harlem's upper class. During that time, Ann took writing classes at Columbia university and wrote short stories which she published in the NAACP magazine The Crisis. One story, "On Saturday, the Siren Sounds at Noon" so intrigued an editor at Houghton Miffin, that he encouraged Petry to apply for Houghton's fiction fellowship. Petry won the fellowship in 1945 and in 1946 Houghton Miffin published her novel The Street, which tells of a woman struggling to raise her son in an urban environment in New York City.

This novel became a bestseller and was reprinted in 1985 as part of the Black Women Writers series at Beacon Press and reissued in 1992 by Houghton Mifflin when Petry was eighty-five years old. The book is hailed as a "masterpiece" and a "classic" of African American fiction. After the unprecedented success of The Street which sold 1.5 million copies, Petry went on to publish short stories, children's books and novels which continue to be reissued. The Narrows (1953) examines the lives of African Americans in a New England town; The Drugstore Cat (1949), a children's book, and Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad (1955) are among her most notable accomplishments.

In her writings Ann Petry was said to be versatile, drawing from her experiences in Harlem and Connecticut as the basis for her novels and short stories, using history as the backdrop for her adolescent books and descriptions so vivid, readers can almost see and feel the characters and their settings. She was also called a visionary and a humanist, writing about interracial relationships and feminism long before they became realities in America. Ms. Petry died at the age of ninety in a convalescent home in Old Saybrook, five years after The Street was reissued. As writers we can learn a lot from the works of this trailblazer.

In Hamlet there are three key families which are the main focus in the play. The families are Hamlet's family, Polonius's family and Fortinbras's family. There are many similarities and differences between all three separate families. One similarity that all three families have is that at least one member of their family seem to have a hidden agenda. Hamlet wants revenge against Claudius and the reason Claudius did so was to become the new king of Denmark. Laertes wants revenge for his father Polonius who was killed by Hamlet. Lastly Fortinbras has a hidden agenda when he initially says that he wants to pass through Denmark to invade Poland but there are suspicions that he has a secret agenda to overthrow Denmark and reclaim the land that was lost when the old king of Denmark defeated his father and became king.

There is also spying in Hamlet between families and this shows that there is an absence of trust. An example would be when Polonius sends the spy Reynaldo to go and spy on Laertes as he suspects that his son is up to no good. He says "your bait of falsehood take this carp of truth", this is a metaphor and means simply use a subtle lie and catch the truth. Polonius is telling use the bait of lies to find out more information and more specifically the truth. This idea of telling a lie and finding out the truth can also be backed up when Polonius says "with windlasses and with assays of bias" which again can be interpreted as indirect attempts so by telling a lie so the truth comes out. "Windlasses" metaphorically means to decoy so for example decoy an animal by making an indirect approach, and so by Reynaldo is to tell a small lie as a decoy and as an indirect attempt to find out the truth.

This absence of Trust can also be seen in the family relationship of Hamlet and Claudius as Hamlet knows his uncle killed his brother to become the king and Claudius sees Hamlet as a threat his throne and at one point even attempts to send him to England and have him killed there. The reason for Claudius to send Hamlet to England is explained when Claudius says "since yet thy cicatrice looks raw and red...thou mayst not coldly set." Cicatrice is a scar or wound and the assumption is that England has recently been wounded by the Danish sword and therefore is more likely to carry out the king's command of killing Hamlet. Also coldly set could mean that they are unlikely to set aside and ignore the fact that Hamlet who is from Denmark is coming to England and with orders to kill him they are not willing to just set this aside and let him live.

Shakespeare also presents Hamlets family to be incestuous especially his mother and uncle who are now married after the death of the old kind. Hamlet seems disgusted that his mother is able to move on so quickly and warm the bed of the old kings with his brother. In Hamlets first soliloquy he says that the time since his father died and his mother remarried is "two months". Ophelia on the other hand said that it has been "twice two months" since the death of the old king and so it could be said that Hamlet shows his disgust over what his mother and uncle have done by marrying by over exaggerating how quickly his father has been forgotten.

In the first soliloquy he also says "so excellent a king, that was to this Hyperion to a satyr". This first part here shows how Hamlet is unfavourable towards his uncle the new king and his father the old king by saying look at what the king once was and look at him now. He compares the two both as family and as the role of king. In both circumstances it seems that Hamlet seems to dislike his uncle and not trust him. "Hyperion to satyr" this again shows how he compares both his uncle the new king and his father the old king by saying that his father is a "hyperion" which is the Greek god of the sun which also uses elemental imagery on how he views his father as the sun which is needed for all life to exist. He then goes on to say that his uncle is a "satyr" which is a grotesque creature, half human and half goat. They were also associated with drunkenness and lechery. This again can be linked back to the fact of Hamlets hate and disgust over what his uncle and mother have done by marrying and sharing the bed that was shared by the mother and the old king at one point.

This dysfunctional family of Hamlets could be argues to be one of the reasons if not them ain reason for Hamlet going downwards in a spiral and eventually resulting in him becoming obsessed with revenge and becoming a fragile state. This can also be backed up by the fact that the whole reason Hamlet even considers revenge in the first place is that his uncle had killed which is also a biblical reference to the story of Cain and Abel. In this story one brother killed the other due to jealousy, greed and to then later on marry the dead brother's wife. This biblical reference seems to go well with what Hamlets uncle has done because he killed his brother due to his own greed for power and the throne of Denmark and he then goes on to marry his brother's wife. Hamlet refers to this as the "greatest sin".

Hamlets obsession to get revenge on his uncle could also been seen as the Oedipus complex which was developed by a man called Freud after watching Hamlet. If his theory was to be used to describe Hamlets actions and his interaction with his mother and his uncle then it would be that Hamlet wishes to get rid of his uncle due to his sexual desire for his mother.

The Presentation of Denmark in the Opening Act of Hamlet

The presentation of Hamlet's Denmark is first seen in the opening scene of Hamlet where the two guards enter and the first thing that is said is "who is there?" This immediately sets the mood of the whole play and to a certain extent what kind of state Denmark is in which is in a state of high alert, also the darkness and the mystery of who is there sets an ominous tone for the play and also sets an ominous mood for Denmark. It also suggests that the opening scene of Hamlet is set in the dark of night as they are unable to identify one another and so are on edge as to who the other person could be exactly.

Also when Bernardo says "long live the king" it shows that he is loyal to the current king of Denmark and by doing so proves that he is on the side of the other guard. This whilst establishing that both guards on the same side also shows that there could be an enemy and so the audience are able to conclude that currently Denmark is in a state of war. Throughout the whole of Act 1 scene 1 there is stichomythia where both Bernardo and Francisco have alternating lines and also there are blank verses that are broken up when Francisco says "Bernardo?" to which Bernardo replies in the same form of broken up blank verses "He." By using this dramatic technique it suggests that the lines are spoken rather quickly one after the other which hints that there is some sort of tension between the two guards which is rather strange as they are only changing shifts and again this hints at the possibility that at that time there is some form of military instability in Denmark leaving everyone on edge.

In Act 1 scene 1 when Marcellus and the two sentinels see the ghost for the first time and they see that the ghost looks exactly like the late king hamlet "in the same figure like the king that's dead." Despite this they view it as a bad omen that maybe the men should have a military build up in Denmark in response to Fortinbras recruiting an army. Although Fortinbras's army is supposed to be used against Poland, they fear he may attack Denmark to get revenge for his father's death, and reclaim the land his father lost to King Hamlet. This is also backed up when they see the ghost in its full armour as the old king used to wear "such was the very armour he had on." This again shows the risks that impose Denmark and how it is on the brink of war and the fact that the old king hamlet's armour is discussed suggests that the old king was very much a war like king who was a hero to the people and so Denmark is going from a traditional war like place to a more political and diplomatically Denmark which can be seen when the new king Claudius sends a messenger to the king of Norway rather than confront the army which is being prepared to ensure that the army does not attack Denmark but merely passes through and goes to Poland.

In Act one scene 4 again the ghost is viewed as an omen on the fate of Denmark when Hamlet says to the ghost "Be thou a spirit of health or goblin damned," so here it would be that Hamlet is asking the ghost is it an omen fro good health possibly to Denmark or is it a goblin. Then he goes on to say "Bring with thee airs from heaven or blasts from hell" this brings about the contrast and again an ominous mystery as to whether the ghost here is to bring gentle breezes or violent blighting gusts.

Also in scene 1 act 4 Marcellus says "something is rotten in the state of Denmark" this could refer to a number of things such as the new king Claudius marrying his bothers wife and becoming king or it would also be hinted at the ghost and it being an omen of bad news. Horatio replies to this "heaven will direct it." This can be seen as Horatio saying that all that is currently wrong in Denmark in the end heaven will direct it all too good and that the heavens will make everything okay.

With such a large expatriate population, many of the working artists in this tiny island nation hail from foreign shores, but Cayman itself has produced a great number of the country's finest, most respected and sought after painters and sculptors.

At the time of the establishment of the National Gallery, a group of artists came together in a co-operative effort and christened themselves "Native Sons". This avant guard group became a powerful driving force behind the expansion and modernization of Caymanian art, dedicating themselves to pushing the envelope and educating the public in the field of contemporary fine art.

Faced as they were with a very stereotypical view of what art from a Caribbean island should be, they began to change views and attitudes towards both art and the artists and should really be credited with responsibility for much of the growth and development that has taken place ever since.

A very conservative Christian society such as that in Cayman, was not always receptive to what was perceived as rawness or "risque" depictions in paintings and sculptures, leaning much more towards safety, dependability and traditional values and expectations. In this environment, the emerging consciousness of many artists left them frustrated by what seemed to them, the desire to confine them to painting boats, seascapes and palm trees for tourists. This was something that these young, respectfully rebellious and forward thinking Caymanian artists, found stifling and in them grew the seeds of artistic revolution. They knew that if art was to have a future, free expression had to be pushed and encouraged for their art and creativity to develop and expand beyond its heretofore staid and restrictive societal constraints.

Of course, many artists in Cayman today still produce a lot of work depicting the natural beauty that surrounds them every day and many of them do some very fine work, but Cayman art by both local and expatriate artists has now become some of the most varied and original in the region. This is not to say that tradition and history have been forgotten. Indeed the advances in progressive and contemporary art have produced the added bonus of an upsurge in the interest of past traditions and skills and a resurgence of the practice and teaching of traditional arts and crafts. Art education has also benefited greatly from the wave of artistic awareness that is now recognized as such an important part of both the country's and society's identity, development and economy.

The growth of fine art as an industry, whilst it has produced many benefits, has also caused corresponding difficulties but these are perhaps best dealt with in a separate article.

Ultimately, for art lovers, the Cayman Islands are a Caribbean haven. The prices for art at the top end of the market remain high, so people wanting to own an original painting by some of the best known talents have to expect to pay upwards of CI$3000 and there really is no upper ceiling.

For those of more modest means there are still some true bargains to be found in the original art market, particularly from some of the most talented emerging artists whose work can still be snapped up in the sub CI$1000 range and should still represent good investments in the long term.

Additionally, with more artists now able to take advantage of locally based skilled print makers and the latest in technology, the opportunity of purchasing high quality reproductions of their favourite original paintings for a fraction of the cost, has placed the work of many of the top names within much easier reach for a far greater number of art lovers.

The determining factors of the price of original artwork in the Cayman Islands remain largely the same as anywhere else in the world. The complexity and man hours involved in a piece will have some bearing, the history, desirability, and past commercial success of an artist are major factors and with established artists, the size of a work can also have a major bearing on cost.

Buyers should not be afraid to negotiate but bear in mind that the artists who command the highest prices are, by definition, the least likely to be in a position to discount heavily. The market value of their work has invariably been established over a very long period of time and will not fluctuate too greatly. Theirs is the calibre of work that is justifiably considered an investment in addition to desirability based on its unique beauty.

As I have said before that "it is my lifetime thesis" and may actually require my entire earth existence to fully cover; as it is an evolving artworks that respond to the process of "cause and effect"; "learning and unlearning"; and Bible principle.

I am a Christian and my faith lead me to this vocation, so every now and then I will refer to The Word of God for references and support. The first verse that I would like you to focus into is Proverbs 16:3 "Commit thy work unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established." All else will depend on the teaching of the Bible, the written revelation of God for man. I believe we will never go wrong if we abide in God.

I advise would be practitioner of this Art Experience to "chew life a little slower" so to enable the lesson from daily routine to sink in and benefit from the full potential of realization. Yes, there's always the threat of distraction so we must REMIND ourselves to always set aside a quiet time. There are many books on meditation that might help you, and you may even have a process of your own, the important factor here is that you focus on the word of God. Probably, you can start humming a song you like, a Christian song that uplifts your spirit, or go directly in praying and asking the Holy Spirit to comes in....and then, which is the MOST important, read the word of God.

When we read we dissect the detail of a passage, like to whom it is spoken into, when we can't understand certain passage, do not stress yourself....leave it alone in the meantime. The purpose of meditation is to experience the presence of God and not to confuse you. Seek a right passage that fits what you are experiencing at the moment. So, it is advisable that you have thoroughly read both The New and Old Testament. Mature Christian in faith knows exactly the right verse in any given situation, lets assume that you are just a new born baby and still on the process of growing....so we take in soft food first or milk. Claim a passage and call it your own.

It has been very helpful for me, most especially during the early stage of my self-searching to daily utter Bible verses. These verses keep me from falling apart.

So how do we really capture the essence of a given situation?

The first value we must acquire and polish within our lives is the ability to "focus". A camera need the right aperture and focus to achieve a clear image. We must learn to see things as they really are and not what they seems to be. The tutu is the symbol of ballet, the iconic representation of La Danse. The tutu is celebrated in venues as diverse as the painter Degas's pastel sketches of ballerinas to a little girl's dreams of becoming a ballerina with the magnificent theatre stages where Ballet is performed in between.

But tutus are relative newcomers to the world of ballet. When the first ballets took place in Italian Renaissance courts during the 1600s, the female dancers wore their own dresses when dancing The pannier-style skirts and long-sleeved bodices that did very little to facilitate fancy footwork and graceful arm movements in Ballet.

Even after the Italian princess Catherine de Medici married the French King Henri II and brought the dance to the French court as the Ballets de Cour, costumery continued to obscure rather than call attention to the legs supporting the graceful dancers.

The first Ballet de Cour was the famous Ballet Comique de la Reine which took place in Paris in 1581 as part of a wedding celebration when Henry III's favourite, the Duke de Joyeuse married Marguerite, the sister of the queen consort Louise of Lorraine. Queen Louise arranged for the composer and choreographer Balthasar de Beaujoyeulx to devise a five and a half hour dance extravaganza. The spectacle, based on the Greek myth of Circe the enchantress, cost over one million écu to produce and starred Queen Louise herself. The climax of the ballet came when the Four Cardinal Virtues appealed to the gods to defeat Circe's malign powers and Jupiter responded by transferring the sorceress's magic to the French royal family.

The costumes worn by dancers of such spectacles as the Ballet Comique de la Reine didn't resemble tutus in the slightest. Instead, they were fashioned from brocades and other heavy materials, richly embroidered, and ornamented. The dancers also wore their own shoes on stage. As one might expect, these kinds of costumes greatly restricted the movements of the dancers.

Ballet became an increasingly popular form of entertainment after this beginning. However because of its association with the French royal class, its popularity was temporarily eclipsed around the time of the French Revolution. The French Revolution also brought a significant change to dancewear itself inspiring simple, lighter clothing that permitted a far greater range of movement. It was around this time that heeled shoes gave way to slippers, skirts were shortened to ankle length and ballet tights made their first appearance.

Still, it wasn't until 1832 that the familiar layers of ethereal tulle made their first formal appearance on a ballerina named Marie Taglioni who was dancing the lead role in La Sylphides, a ballet her father, the famous Italian choreographer Filippo Taglioni, created just to showcase her talents. Taglioni was so proud of her excellent pointe work that she shortened her skirt to show it off - and so the tutu was born.

Taglioni's tutu was of a style that has come to be known as the Romantic tutu, a dreamy confection of three to five layers of soft, floaty tulle with a high waisted skirt that ended just at the calf. Other familiar tutu styles include the tiered, graduated net costume with top skirts of chiffon and organdy known as the pancake tutu; the fitted bodice and short, stiff, bell-shaped skirt known as the classical tutu; and the short, loose tulle skirt known as the powder-puff tutu that was invented by George Balanchine's designer, Karinska.

There has been much debate about whether studio glass should be classified as art or craft. What is the difference between art and craft anyways? This article goes over the history of studio glass briefly and explains why the classification is not that important compared to appreciating it as it is.

Studio glass is defined as unique work handmade by a single artist-maker, as distinguished from factory-made glassware.

France was the center since the 1880s, with famous artists like Emile Galle, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and their contemporaries. Other famous French names are Henry Cros, Albert Dammous, Maurice Marinot, and Francois Decorchemont. Georges Despret, a Belgian, also contributed to the process.

In the 1950s in America, artists began to establish networks, in which they concentrated on kiln-forming - fusing, slumping, enameling, and lampworking. In the 1960s, the small pot kiln developed which could be set up anywhere and was manageable by one artist. Another discovery that fueled the American movement was the availability of glass that melts at low temperatures. Harvey Littleton was an influential figure in this.

As interesting as the history of studio glass is, some people worry about its classification. Is it art or craft?

It is hard to decide on, because its very definition is very blurry; is a glassware studio glass just because it was handmade or made by one single artist? Unlike our assumptions today, early factory-made glassware was not always made by machines. Meanwhile, individual artists may use molds or other various tools and "machines" that technically disqualify their work from being defined as studio glass. But that seems to be too narrow a definition and seems to make little sense.

Moreover, it is not clear why the term "craft" should have a negative connotation, especially because it originally meant "magic, strength, power, science" in the 15th century. Craftsmen have been and are an integral part of the society and the art scene. They make useful things that we cannot live without. Similarly, art can be useful, too. Many monumental works serve a function, and modern art and design works are often as aesthetically appealing as they are useful. But somehow many people seem to believe that the biggest characteristic of art is that it is useless. Art vs. craft and its hierarchy has been debated for a long time, but the distinction seems to be superfluous and blurred at most.

The folding fans originated and developed specifically in the city of Kyoto in Japan. It became popular at the court and was called "Akomeogi. There are three types of war fans: gunsen, tessen, and gunbai or gunpai. Gunsen were typical folding fans used by warriors for the simple purpose of cooling themselves. Tessen, on the other hand, were folding fans that may look like any other fan from the outside but are actually designed with outer spokes made of heavy iron plates. These weapons were carried by the warriors to b used when needed in places where swords or other weapons were not allowed. Finally, gunbai were large open fans made of iron, metal with wooden core, or solid wood. These were carried only by high-ranking officials and used to defend themselves against flying arrows or to signal their troops.

Every now and then, we are surrounded by adverts calling for people to audition for various shows. Have you ever taken your time to analyze these auditioning organizations? If you do, you'll find that some of these auditions being conducted by the panel are of poor quality. This is the main reason why some aspiring musicians or actors pass an audition, but then the public never hear from that person again because he/she isn't fit enough to compete with those who are already in the field. There are a few factors which can strike out an audition that's serious from that of jokers, they are as follows:

1. Lack of biasness. Favouring one's contestant over the other because he/she possesses characteristics which you admire; it is a shame that even the largest audition centres in Los Angeles do this, and what makes it worse is that all this is most often aired live on TV. We hear judges openly admitting that they prefer one contestant over the other because of the way that person talks or the conducts he/she possesses. This shows a lot of unprofessional behaviour on the panel's part as the focus now shifts from whose most deserving, to who's the most pleasing to us minus the talent.

2. Lack of rudeness. Some auditioning panels in the city are formed of people who treat competitors as if they are robots without feelings. As long as you are a human being you are prone to do a couple of mistakes here and there. That doesn't mean that you are stupid or unfit for the job; but rather, it says it just wasn't your day and you should try another day or at some other place. Sadly, some of the judges don't seem to understand this and they go out lashing derogatory words; for example, one may be told to just go home for he/she is of no help at all, or to try the second option because the first one is clearly not meant for that person. Such words may make a person never show up for any auditions for the rest of their life.

3. Competency. It is common nowadays to find a panel where one or two of the judges don't have sufficient skills to assess the competitors. It seems that these judges are chosen not by merit but by who they know in the industry. It is very unlikely for a person who has never sung before a huge audience to teach an aspiring musician to do the same and be successful. This is because he doesn't have the experience to back up what he/she is teaching.

4. Sustainability and applicability of your talent in the real world. Once a competitor emerges the best in auditions, the person is usually given a lump sum of money or any other incentive to congratulate him/her; a contract with a concerned company can also be offered to the winner, but is this the best way to appreciate talent? It is common nowadays that once the contract is signed, the now musician dishes out one or two songs that are poorly received by the public, and then the person disappears from the scene or try their luck in another field. The main reason behind this kind of behavior is that the contestants aren't allowed to be hundred percent original, but rather, are taught how to adopt and use other people's ideas. Trouble now comes when the company you are signed to requires you to produce your own song.

Nice and simple. Is there a Rage Against The Machine monk setting himself on fire covering the entire length of your closet wall? Is it a "heart grenade" ala Green Day, those wacky urban poets? Eminem, a hard to find Pearl Jam perhaps? Any of these standards and you got your self a standard, run of the mill non-music listener. They're probably not all that much into the "scene" as much as they know what they like... or at least like to look at. You could do worse! If you got an always less than subtle Jim Morrison, Hendrix, Joplin, Dead, Stones, Beatles thing going... well, you better brush up on you Cheech and Chong. Remember you don't gotta join the party to appreciate the good music that will be blasting out of you partner's radio ohhhh about 26 hours a day... but you better learn MIGHTY quick what a towel at the bottom of the door is a single for. The same is true if you got a huge Dave Matthews, Phish, Bob Marley, or Tupac apparel covering the walls. Only expect the music to be MUCH more constant and infinitely more annoying. There's the rare Cradle Of Filth you might run into. Notice the operative word in that sentence is RUN! Run far, run wide... just RUN!! Mostly it's all good as long as it is a recognizable band, musician, or artist. You're there to learn, even if you aren't into that scene, you might be better off giving new things a try. There's only one no-no. NO BRITNEY! NO BOY BANDS!!! Especially if you're a dude, dude! There ain't no reason on this planet that you need to be staring at those dreamy Justin Timberlake eyes for months at a time once you get passed the age of... oh I don't know... EVER!!! If you cannot find a band you like to put on your walls... there's plenty of other choices, like...

Every one knows you're a smart fella or filly... now show them why. Can you tell the difference between a Salvador Dali and a Van Gogh? I couldn't, but my roommate could. Let just say that if you see a Georgia O'Keeffe going up on your wall that first day. Expect the highest class of fine art students to be discussing all sorts of mind blowing topics at 4am while you're studying for that physics final. Now I don't exactly know what you DO with a fine arts degree... but I know you look FABULOUS doing it. Lets just say that I didn't mind being kept up all night by the fans of my roommate's taste in posters. My only hint about a fine art print is this: frame, frame, frame!!! Why does a lil' black border make you seem like the cat's meow? I have no idea. But I know this, the only difference I could find between a poster and an aficionado is... a frame. Go figure!

HUMOR POSTERS

Maybe your roommate is into Albert Einstein sticking his tongue out (and who wouldn't be), maybe it's one of those crazy fake inspirational posters, how about why beer is better than a half naked (or is she half dressed?) woman? Whatever the case is... that is awesome... for ten minutes! You need a closet full of them to keep the joke new. Here's a tip: have at least four up in rotation at all time. After about a week you put up a new one. Believe me, every time it goes up you and all your friends will find it as funny as the first time you saw it because, lets face it, you grew up in the 90's you have the attention span of an ADD patient! LED lighting is generally cheap, due to the large amount of imported lights to the UK from East. There are plenty of small, compact solutions which are available and affordable for any stage decoration at schools or for a band or DJ - like LED strip lights. This is actually a further advantage: these compact solutions are easily portable, and can be create a variety of effects used thoughtfully.

Unlike other lighting solutions, LED lights are lightweight and emit little heat as well as no UV radiation. These qualities are very practical, because the lights mean less hazard of fire and are healthier for those on stage. It also reduces the number of accidents in the backstage. The main reason behind the low heat emission is the excellent conversion rate of LEDs, turning 90% of energy into light instead of heat. This way these sets of small lights can reach a really high brightness at an extremely low cost.

The characteristic, however, that makes LEDs really popular in stage lighting is the wide range of colours you can create with the so-called RGB technology. By combining the brightness of red, green and blue lights, you can mix them into any colours on a wide spectrum. With this single tool you can create all sorts of moods and atmospheres on stage; especially if you need soft light. RGB LEDs are perfect for artistic purposes with the many effects you can achieve with them.

White LED lights seem to be less useful for stage purposes at the moment. In this matter technology will have to develop a bit further before a very bright and focused light can be used on stage. Quality solutions already exist, but their price is too high at the moment for smaller theatres. Besides brightness, the colour rendering index (CRI) is not the best for the majority of LEDs. This actually means that white LED lights do not have a full spectrum of colours, and objects may appear very different in their light than in natural light or in tungsten light. This quality also gets better both with the development of the technology and the price you are willing to pay for your LED lights.

Another main advantage of LEDs is the dimmability. These lights can be dimmed even better than an incandescent, and definitely much better than a fluorescent light. Since the technology is PWM (pulse-width-modulation), the lights are switched on and off very quickly. To avoid flickering completely, you need both good quality dimming and good quality lights too. This at the moment is mostly available with LEDs of higher price categories.

Dimming, a wide range of colours, low heat emission, brightness and extremely low consumption of power - these characteristics are the winning combination if you want to operate your stage lighting at low cost. One important thing about LED lighting is that its technology develops extremely fast and it is still in its infancy, so functions and quality we lack today might be available tomorrow.

Conceptual "Art" - Why?

In 1917, Marcel Duchamp turned a urinal upside down, renamed it "Fountain" and exhibited it as a piece of art. This was unprecedented at the time, but nearly a century later, galleries are full of similar pieces: Tracy Emin's bed, Damien Hirst's shark, Yves Klein's empty room, Antony Gormley's smoked filled box. The list goes on.

How can these objects be called art? Robert Rauschenberg's alleged portrait of Iris Clert sums the situation up; the portrait consisting of a telegram containing the words "This is a portrait of Iris Clert if I say so".

Is conceptual art really art at all? It's tempting to answer, with gut instinct: no, it isn't. Saying that fire is cold doesn't stop it from being hot, and saying that a telegram is a portrait doesn't make it a portrait. If you can't paint, or draw, or sculpt, then you're not an artist. And even if you are an artist, not everything you create is art.

However, these are mere opinions. My statement that Rauschenberg's telegram is not a portrait carries no more authority than his statement that it is. To go beyond this, it's necessary to develop a rigorous definition of what art is, and then demonstrate that conceptual "art" does not fit this definition.

Art is Universal

Firstly, art is universal. In the 1860s, when Victorian archaeologists first discovered cave paintings, they immediately recognised them as art. One archaeologist, Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, was even accused of paying a local artist to forge the cave paintings.

While the talent and skill of the cave painters might have been questioned, that they were engaged in the same activity as contemporary painters like (for example) the Pre-Raphaelites was not.

This demonstrates the universality of art; i.e., art can be recognised as art by all cultures. If the ancient Romans had been shown Australian aboriginal art, they would have recognised it as art. If the ancient Olmecs of Mesoamerica, who carved giant stone heads, had been shown Michaelangelo's David, they would have recognised that they were engaged in the same activity. However, San bushmen or Mongolian nomads would not accept that an upturned bicycle wheel is a piece of art. Why should we?

The idea that an unmade bed or a pickled shark can be a piece of art is completely bound to our culture - to this particular time and place. If our civilisation were to be wiped out, and humans a hundred years from now were to recover the archaeological remains, they would still recognise the contents of The National Gallery as art; they would not recognise the contents of the Tate Modern.

Art Creates a Sacred Space

Secondly, art creates a sacred space. Experiencing a piece of art - whether a painting, a film, a book, a piece of music, etc. - involves stepping into a space which is set aside from everyday concerns, and in which strong emotions can be evoked for their own sake.

Our rational minds are built on top of more primitive, animal layers, which operate through emotion and instinct. Art is a cognitive gateway which allows us to evoke responses from these lower brain regions. Consider: if there were no art, music, film, literature, etc., then we would never feel emotions except when they were evoked by events in our own lives.

By doing this, art - like dreams - teaches us how to cope with strong emotions. Conceptual art does not fulfil this function. It is closer to being a visual riddle than a gateway to passionate emotions; inane, trite and pretentious.

Art Transcends the Personal

Thirdly, art is about transcending the personal. An artist takes his own personal experiences and distils them to a set of universal, human motifs that the audience can identify with.

Picasso's Guernica encapsulates a sense of horror, revulsion, chaos, aggression and turmoil that we all instinctively recognise. The historical context of the painting and the personal circumstances of its creation amplify and help place these emotions, but they are not necessary to experience the disorder and violence encoded in the piece. Picasso has taken historical events and his own personal experiences of them, and created something that embodies a universal aspect of the human.

In many cases, it is not necessary to have any contextual information at all. A musician takes his personal experiences and uses them to write a song: about love, betrayal, redemption, tragedy, etc. Millions of people might hear that song and relate it to events in their own lives; it may exactly describe their situation and help them deal with their problems.

The personal experiences of the musician who wrote it are not only irrelevant, they actually detract from this process. They would change the song from being about a universal experience and pin it down to some trivial details of someone whose life the audience knows little about and cannot relate to.

An important consequence of this process - maybe even the function of it - is that the audience gains a sense of catharsis. The message is that you are not alone. Billions of human beings have experienced what you are experiencing, and understand.

Conceptual art does not do this. It doesn't convey universal human themes, or allow the audience to transcend their personal experiences. There is no sense of catharsis to be gained from Rauschenberg's telegram.

Family Resemblance

Art is universally recognisable as art. Art creates a sacred space. Art allows us to transcend the personal. Conceptual "art" does not fulfil any of these criteria.

The last two points are purely functional, but the first requires more examination. Why is art universally recognisable?

The twentieth century philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein demonstrated that we cannot give any definition of a word which does not presuppose our ability to use it. The meaning of a word is determined not by its definition but by the context in which it is used; the meaning is contextual, not discrete.

Consider a word like "fire," which can be used in reference to the actual substance fire, as an exclamation to warn of a spreading fire, to refer to a fireplace in a house which may or may not contain the actual substance fire, as a command ("fire that cannon"), or as an abstract verb ("you're fired"). The meaning of the word at any particular time depends not on an atomic definition but on the context in which the word is used.

In fact, the only way in which we can convey any definitive meaning of the word fire is through example, as we have done above, or through a comparison with other words which are already able to use; for example, if we say that the word can be used as a noun, we understand this because we are familiar with other nouns. In turn, we understand the concept of a noun because we are familiar with how nouns are used. Although we can provide a definition, the definition follows our understanding of the meaning - it does not provide our understanding.

As an explanation, Wittgenstein discusses the word "game". We cannot formulate a description which serves to define the class, because any definition will exclude things which we do consider games or include things which are not games. For example, if we say games are characterised by competition, then we exclude games like solitaire from our definition. If we say that games are characterised by physical activity then we exclude games like chess. If we say that games are characterised by play, then we include many playful activities which are not games and exclude games like poker which are not particularly playful.

There is no characteristic or set of characteristics common to all games by which we can define the class. However, just because we cannot give a solid definition of "game" does not mean that we don't understand what the word means - we do not need a definition of the word in order to understand its meaning. We are familiar with enough games that we can determine which things do and don't constitute games, based on their similarity or dissimilarity to one another. Wittgenstein termed this concept "family resemblance".

Implications for Art

Wittgenstein's concept of family resemblance can be applied to the question of whether conceptual art is really art. We recognise whether or not something is art by comparing it, unconsciously, to other things which have had the word "art" applied to them.

My functional definitions of what constitutes art are abstractions that can only be derived after we already have a working understanding of what the term refers to. Why, then, should we not just say that whether or not something is considered art is determined by culture?

The fact that art is universally recognisable as art implies that it is an innate behaviour with clear (albeit unconscious) parameters, which are stable across cultures and which all human beings can recognise intuitively. Just because we grasp those parameters without being able to fully articulate them does not imply that they are culturally bound or susceptible to change. That Victorian archaeologists recognised 14,000 year old cave paintings as works of art is testament to this.

This country is full of homes and estates that mark the history books and serve as tourist attractions. From the infant days of our country and the homes of our first presidents, popular authors to rock and roll stars, the tours are endless. One of the most famous homes in America is no doubt that of The King of rock and roll - Elvis Presley's Graceland.

Graceland is a sprawling estate covering over 13 acres in the heart of Memphis, Tennessee. Elvis Presley originally purchased the home for his parents in 1957 and eventually made it his home as well in 1958. The home today is over 17,000 square feet with a total of 23 rooms that includes 8 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms. The exterior of the mansion is made of tan limestone with the front portico being held up with giant white columns and 2 iconic stone lions on either side. After Presley moved in to the home he made a lot of changes including the addition of a music themed gate, swimming pool and the famous "Jungle Room" which eventually was converted into a recording studio.

Elvis Presley had a bold sense of style and enjoyed bright colors and crazy, eclectic accessories and furniture. One of the first rooms you see when you enter Graceland is the living room. Elvis liked the rooms in his home to have a "theme" and the living room is no exception. The walls in the living room are covered with mirrors and beautiful, brightly colored stained glass with peacocks in the design. There is a clean look to the room with the white marble fireplace, white Louis XIV furniture and white carpet. Some people thought his décor was tacky but his home is the second most visited home in the country, second only to the White House.

Another theme room that Presley created was his Trophy Room. This room's purpose is exactly what it sounds destined for -t o display all of his awards, flashy costumes and even to race slot cars. The walls in the Trophy Room are filled floor to ceiling with awards and plaques from his best selling records. Dotting the rooms edges are glass enclosures that illuminate some of Presley's most flashy, famous costumes that he wore on stage. Presley's Trophy Room recently got a makeover and now includes an interactive timeline for all visitors to the mansion to enjoy.

Possibly the most famous room in Graceland is the Jungle Room. The Jungle Room displayed Presley's style to the core and is quite a sight to see. The Jungle Room was originally a patio until the 1960's when he made it part of the main house. When he created the Jungle Room, he created a trend that is still hot today - the Man Cave. This room was eventually turned into a recording studio where Presley recorded quite a few of his most famous records. There is wood on the walls and green shag carpeting spread across the floor and ceiling. The furniture, accessories (including exotic plants) and window coverings all make you feel like you are sitting in the middle of the jungle. There is even a waterfall feature that gives the room a truly authentic feel.
